Hy-Vee Inc. says it will provide 1,500 free biometric screenings at select Hy-Vee stores throughout its eight-state region during American Heart Month.

A biometric screening is a combination of measurements and readings that may help identify potential risk factors for chronic diseases or conditions such as heart disease, hypertension or diabetes.

Hy-Vee dietitians will collect a blood sample from a finger stick that will be used to determine cholesterol levels, triglycerides and glucose levels, according to a news release. They will also take resting blood pressure, height, weight and waist measurements, and will calculate body mass index.

The entire screening process typically takes 15-20 minutes, and all results will be reviewed and received during the screening, Hy-Vee said. Individuals must be 18 years or older to participate and are required to fast 10-12 hours prior to screening.

Registration is required for the free biometric screening, which can be done online. Once registered, a local Hy-Vee dietitian will schedule a screening based on availability. Free biometric screenings are only available for a limited time and are provided in partnership by Silk, Mid-Day Squares, PB2 Performance Protein and the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council, the release said. A list of Hy-Vee locations offering the screening can be found on Hy-Vee’s Dietitian Finder webpage.

Hy-Vee said dietitians will offer additional events throughout the month to support customers’ wellness journeys:

  • Free dietitian discovery session — Individuals can jump-start their health journey by scheduling a complimentary discovery session with a Hy-Vee registered dietitian to learn about the different services available and choose the right individual program for their wellness journey. Discovery sessions are offered virtually, by phone or in person, and also available in Spanish. Customers can schedule a discovery session with the Dietitian Discovery Call Center by either registering online.
  • Healthy You Subscription Service — The Hy-Vee dietitian team also offers the Healthy You subscription service. This subscription provides customers with access to a Hy-Vee dietitian for personalized nutrition advice and coaching, as well as on-demand workshops, fitness videos and more. To subscribe, customers can visit Hy-Vee.com/health or contact a local Hy-Vee dietitian.
