With a total of 242 stores, Safeway holds a 21.63% market share in Northern California and Nevada, according to 2021 Shelby Market Data.

The second closest retailer is Walmart, which holds 8.24% market share. After Walmart, Raley’s scored a 6.26% share of sales and Whole Foods accounted for 5.94% of the market’s grocery sales, according to Shelby.

According to Shelby Market Data, this area includes Fresno, Hanford-Corcoran, Madera, Merced, Modesto, Napa, Reno, Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom, San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Santa Rosa-Petaluma, Stockton, Vallejo, Visalia and Yuba City.
