The Star Group of Companies, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is pledging to reduce plastic use, following a number of steps it has taken towards that goal.

The company emphasizes that the industry needs to work on sustainable packaging efforts together, and will be talking about that effort at the Canadian Produce Marketing Association’s tradeshow and convention in Montreal April 3-4.

“We are shifting our focus internally and looking at innovation through a different lens,” David Karwacki, CEO of The Star Group, said in a news release. “By engaging customers, suppliers and pure science we can come up with eloquent solutions that consumers will love. We all know that people want to make a difference in reducing plastic. As an industry if we join together we can make changes quickly.”

Star Group companies include BC Hot House Foods and Sliced FC Ltd. The company’s booth at CPMA is No. 1607.

The Star Group has already taken steps for this initiative:

  • Started a conversion to top-seal lidding, which cuts plastic by 30%;
  • Using recyclable sleeves for Inspired Greens line of whole head lettuce;
  • Using punnets with thinner walls;
  • Investing in pallet wrappers that use recyclable wrap in all facilities; and
  • Recycling programs in packinghouses and offices.
