Amado, Ariz.-based Wholesum has a new line of vegetables in sustainable packaging that will roll out in stores this month.

The line includes organic tomatoes on the vine, bell peppers, zucchini, yellow squash and slicer cucumbers, according to a news release. The new packaging includes a recyclable and biodegradable corrugated formed tray and a biodegradable band. The trays are moisture-resistant and hardy but still allow breathability and visibility, per the release.

“Being an organic grower not only means exploring and implementing sustainable farming practices but also creating sustainable packaging that won’t be detrimental to the earth,” Ricardo Crisantes, chief commercial officer of Wholesum, said in the release. “It has been a long road of research and prototype testing, but we are very pleased with what we can now offer our customers and consumers.”

The color of the band on each package was selected to contrast well with the color of the produce inside. The trays are described as stackable and easy to prop up.

“The need for packaging has greatly increased the past year due to COVID-19 and the growth of e-commerce, along with the need for more sustainable options, so the timing of our new packaging couldn’t be more relevant,” Crisantes said in the release. “We are confident that the new line of packaging will align well with our customers and their consumers’ needs, and we are excited to see the success across retail and digital shelves.”
