Chiquita supports fitness and sustainability at NYC marathon

Chiquita Brands International is the banana sponsor for the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon for the second year in a row.

Chiquita Brands International is the banana sponsor for the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon for the second year in a row.

Chiquita plans to supply runners and spectators with 32,000 bananas at the start of the race and begin a banana peel collection and recycling process to grow environmental responsibility, according to a news release.

The company plans to sponsor three runners: Frankie Ruiz, co-founder of the Miami marathon, running coach Sebastián Castro and triathlete Constantinos Hoursoglou, according to the release.

Earlier this year, Chiquita and Ruiz worked together to develop Chiquita’s fitness sticker challenge, according to the release.

“At Chiquita, we’re proud to deliver a superfruit packed with vitamins and nutrients that can help our fans achieve their fitness goals — such as completing the TCS New York City Marathon,” Jamie Postell, director of North American sales for Chiquita, said in the release.

After eating bananas, runners and spectators are encouraged to compost the peels and other compostable items in the New York Road Runners waste diversion bins, according to the release. Signs will be posted as a reminder to recycle the peels.

If all peels are recycled Chiquita could divert nearly 14 tons of food scraps from landfills, according to the release.
