Food Lion says it diverted over 80% of its waste this past year

In spotlighting strides in sustainability efforts, the grocer reported progress in waste diversion and recycling various materials and food, while also making donations to support food-insecure communities.

In highlighting its recent sustainability achievements, Food Lion says it diverted 82% of its waste in 2023, equating to 305,000 tons of diverted material.

The Salisbury, N.C.-based grocer also reported that it made significant strides in recycling, processing thousands of tons of materials, including 181.3 thousand tons of cardboard and paper, 8.7 thousand tons of plastic film, bags and bottles, and 18.8 thousand tons of food through various sustainable methods such as animal feed, anaerobic digestion and composting.

The company says it has demonstrated its dedication to combating food insecurity by donating over 73 million pounds of edible food to neighbors in need.

Food Lion is part of Ahold Delhaize USA, the U.S. division of Zaandam-based Ahold Delhaize.
