Pecan marketing order gearing up for promotion

A year after pecan growers agreed to set up a marketing order for promotion, research and quality and size standards, the group has established an office, hired an executive director and launched a website.

The American Pecan Council, Fort Worth, Texas, hired Byron Gossett as executive director and named the 34 governing members (17 voting, 17 alternates).

The American Pecan Council’s activities are funded by grower assessments, three cents for inshell pound for “improved varieties” of pecans and two cents for “native/substandard nuts.”

In a news release, Gossett said the marketing order benefits the industry in three ways:

  • It raises money for a comprehensive campaign to promote positive traits of pecans;
  • It provides the ability to pursue an objective crop estimate; and
  • It can unify a “historically fragmented industry” and uses insight and experience from industry experts.

The American Pecan Council’s website is www.americanpecan.com.

The marketing order covers 15 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas
