CPMA: Open letter from Davis Yung to the produce sector
Dear colleagues,
I am privileged to be the 2021 Board Chair of the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA). Although we find ourselves in unique and challenging times, the Association has continued to support the produce industry by providing the same high-quality and timely services our members expect from us.
In April, CPMA will host our Annual Convention and Trade Show in a new online forum called Fresh Week. We recognize many within our industry are fatigued by zoom calls and virtual gatherings. While this platform is not CPMA’s preferred way for our sector to conduct business, it is nevertheless vital for everyone to make an effort to connect through these means as we continue to build towards a future when we can once again see everyone in person.
Fresh Week is Canada’s only online national networking platform, and the model will feature an array of online content, both live and on-demand, and offer an Expo Hub where exhibitors can share their online presence and connect with attendees. CPMA has met with all our major Canadian retailers and they have committed to support and participate in Fresh Week. For the retail sector, this online event presents a major opportunity for them to include more of their category, produce and store managers, who would normally not be able to travel to attend the show.
Looking back on 2020, CPMA was the first to cancel their show and over the course of the year supported our members on a range of issues both COVID-19 related and non COVID related. As we move into 2021, we understand that as the last in a series of online events there is much skepticism on how well the concept will run. CPMA has also been watching best practices and challenges with shows over 2020 and we do feel we have created a model that will provide value to participating members and partners.
I would like to thank all the companies who have committed to exhibit and sponsor Fresh Week. This is a major source of revenue for CPMA. Your support allows the Association to continue to work on many files including (but not limited to):
• Working with Canadian government officials to keep the supply chain moving and borders open for business.
• Lobbying government to ensure adequate and timely supply of temporary foreign workers.
• Navigating regulatory changes and advocating on behalf of the sector.
• Providing support on food safety recalls and regulatory activity.
• Securing ongoing government funding for the produce industry; and
• Informing Canadian consumers and health professionals of the importance of a diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, and responding to consumer questions and concerns.
As we move forward through 2021 and the post-COVID times ahead, CPMA will continue to support and strengthen the fresh produce sector in Canada with your help. Together we have navigated these turbulent times and together we hope to celebrate our successes!
I look forward to connecting with you at Fresh Week.
All the best and stay safe,
Davis Yung
