What was online grocery shopping like two decades ago? FreshDirect knows.

Bronx, N.Y.-based FreshDirect, one of the early online grocery shopping and delivery services in the U.S., is celebrating 20 years in business.

Since 2002, the company has delivered directly to the doors of online grocery shoppers throughout the Northeast and has distinguished itself by its direct and exclusive relationships with local farmers and suppliers, according to a news release.

To commemorate this milestone, FreshDirect will acknowledge the communities and the customers it serves, as well as FreshDirect employees, with celebrations and promotions leading up to July 11, the day the company opened for business 20 years ago.

“While we are proud to have played an integral role in the defining moments of the online grocery industry over the last 20 years, we are exceptionally proud of bringing families together to create memorable moments over great food,” FreshDirect Managing Director Dave Bass said in the release.

Part of the Ahold Delhaize family of companies, FreshDirect delivers fresh produce and other groceries to customers across seven states and throughout the New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas.

On June 22, FreshDirect will launch a “20 Days of Giveaways” promotion on the website along with an anniversary sweepstakes, awarding one customer free groceries for a year. Also, the company will offer anniversary savings promotions all summer long.

To recognize the efforts of its workforce, FreshDirect will host a 20th anniversary celebration for all employees and their families. There will also be a prize-filled “20 Days of Giveaways'' promotion for employees. Long-term employees will be highlighted in a social media Employee Spotlight campaign.
