Granny wants in on Cinco, too
Domex Superfresh Growers, Yakima, Wash., is promoting granny smith apples as an ideal variety to include in Cinco de Mayo festivities because of its popularity with millenials and Hispanic communities.
Those demographic groups trend toward tarter apples, and so the granny smith variety works well eaten out of hand, juiced or as an ingredient in salsas, salads and pies, according to a news release.
The company suggests cross-merchandising granny smith apples with Tajin as a popular snack pairing, and using cross-promotional ads to inspire purchases by suggesting eating occasions.
Granny smith apples are still the No. 4 apple sold in the U.S. in both organic and conventional dollar share, according to the release, making up 11% of apple category by volume and dollar share (IRI data through Feb. 25).
In addition to granny smith promotions, Domex Superfresh Growers has several content and recipe kits geared toward Cinco de Mayo celebrations, including pear margaritas with a Tajin rim and Honeycrisp salsa fish tacos, which features a Honeycrisp watermelon salsa created by chef Shannon Feltus, according to the release.
