Avocados are kind of a big deal. We all knew that, of course, but take a peek at the chart below and you will see it in visual terms.
Look how the share of avocados has changed relative to this basket of seven fruit commodities.
The dollar value of avocado imports, relative to the seven fruit commodities tracked in the chart, has grown from less than 3% in 2000 to close to 22% in 2019.
At the same time, the share of value for bananas is proportionally smaller. In 2000, the banana accounted for nearly 48% of import value for these seven fruits. That declined to just less than 20% share of this group in 2019.
Berries (the data excludes strawberries so this is mostly blueberries and raspberries) also posted impressive growth, climbing from 5.6% of these seven commodities in 2000 to 23% in 2019.
What will another 20 years bring?
