The Packer’s past issues preserved

I received a welcome email this morning from a one-time employee at The Packer.

From Larry D.:

I’m an old Packer/Red Book man from many years ago. And like many newspapermen, I have kept a lot of things in case I ever wanted to use, or look at, at some future time.

Nearing 80-years and having a wife who has been constantly encouraging me to reduce the clutter, I find myself working toward that end. I assume The Packer has maintained a pretty good library of past issues and projects, but am checking if you are interested in a couple of things before I toss them: three copies of the 17-section 1968 Packer 75th Anniversary issue, 2 copies of the 176-page December 1975 Packer Bicentennial/Preview issue, and 1 copy of the 1970 Packer Brand Directory. If so, I would be happy to pack them up and slow mail back to Lenexa.

I think it was you, Tom, that I sent a small storybook entitled “Remembrances of a Packer Man” a number of years ago. I might have told you then of having been with The Packer & Red Book from February 1968 to December 1978 which included territory work in the Midwest and temporary assignment to the Texas Territory before being Business Manager of the Red Book from 1969 to 1974, then manager of the Northwest Territory working out of Yakima from 1974-78.

Again, if you’re interested in any of the publications, let me know and I’ll get them to you.

TK: I have written about the “Remembrances” book in this space before, as it wonderfully relates first-person tales of a “Packer man” from the early 20th century.

Again, what a gracious offer from Larry; I am looking forward to receiving the historic milestone publications from his library.

While we do have bound volumes of The Packer stretching back many decades, none of those way-back issues Larry referred to is handy for me to look at here and now. Not yet, anyway.
