Morgan Hill, Calif.-based Sakata Seed America has completed phase one completion of the Sakata Seed America Woodland Innovation Center.

With a grand opening in mid-September, the center is an $18.5 million investment comprised of 219 acres in Yolo County, according to a news release.

Plans for the facility were announced in March 2016, and its completion allows Sakata Seed America to consolidate and expand R&D and production practices on a single campus, flexible for future expansion. It includes:

  • The head house, a shop for research and development that allows for washing and drying of breeder seed;
  • Multiple greenhouses for trialing Sakata crops like hot peppers, sweet pepper, tomatoes, watermelons and melons;
  • The farm shop, used for production maintenance and equipment, drying of seed, and other farm related activities; and
  • The washery building, for washing, fluming, and drying wet seed; a 25,000-square-foot warehouse; and a LEED certified office building.
