The Food and Drug Administration’s investigation into the source of an outbreak of cyclosporiasis from McDonald’s salads continues, with a focus on distributors and growers of romaine and carrots in the salads.

The FDA on Aug. 16 updated the number of illnesses in the outbreak to 476, an increase of 40 cases in one week. Cases were reported by health officials in 15 states, although in a few cases the salads were purchased in another state.

The investigation centers on McDonald’s restaurants and a romaine-carrot blend supplied by a Fresh Express processing plant in Streamwood, Ill.

McDonald’s pulled Fresh Express salads from 3,000 restaurants and switched suppliers when health officials reported the outbreak in mid-July.
