UPDATED: McCain recalls all products from facility

(UPDATED Oct. 23) In a rare recall of foods for two types of pathogens, federal agencies are investigating the possible contamination by salmonella and Listeria Monocytogenes of deli items containing processed vegetables from McCain Foods USA Inc.

The vegetables include corn, caramelized mushrooms and fire-roasted tomatoes.

The Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are investigating the recalls. The USDA investigates recalls when they involve meat.

No illnesses have been linked to the recalls, announced by six the FDA on Oct. 19. McCain initiated its recall Oct. 14.

Most of the recalled products contain the vegetables from McCain as ingredients used by “downstream manufacturers and sold under different labels, according to the FDA release. The agencies are asking consumers to avoid eating any of the recalled products. The list of products could grow as more food processors discover they received ingredients from McCain.

“Many of the recalled products require cooking, which if properly done, would reduce the risk of illness from Salmonella or Listeria contamination,” according to the FDA’s notice. “However, some of the products are ‘ready-to-eat’ and would not be cooked.”

The FDA requests that companies that have received the recalled product to contact the FDA recall coordinator (or the USDA for products under that agency’s scope). The FDA said companies should have information available, including: Whether the product was tested when it arrived; information about manufacturing processes; lot codes of products made with the vegetables, and cooking instructions on the packages.

The recalled products include:

• Six meat items from Hy-Vee, that include processed spinach, twice-baed potatoes, tomatoes and mushrooms, with “Best if Used By” dates of Oct. 22 or sooner, shipped to Hy-Vee stores in eight states and recalled by the retailer on Oct. 18;
• Four ready-to-eat salads with chicken from GH Foods CA LLC, Sacramento, Calif. The products, with a total weight of about 1,000 pounds, include Whole Foods Market BBQ Style Chopped Salad with Chicken, a Whole Foods’ Chicken Fajita Salad and others, all containing corn, shipped to California retailers and recalled on Oct. 17;
• Two ready-to-eat salads/wraps from Mary’s Harvest Fresh Foods Inc., Portland, Ore., for a total of 916 pounds of products. One is Mary’s Harvest Southwest Chicken Wrap and the other is Trader Jose’s Mexicali Inspired Salad with Chili Seasoned Chicken, shipped to Oregon and Washington retailers and recalled Oct. 17;
• Two ready-to-eat salads with corn from Prime Deli Corp., Lewisville, Texas, for a total recall of 217 pounds of products. The 7-Eleven brand salads are Bistro Southwest Style Salad with Bacon, in 11.2- and 9.6-ounce containers, shipped to stores in Texas;
• A single salad item from Taylor Farms Northwest LLC, Kent, Wash., a Pork Carnitas Bowl, recalled Oct. 17, containing fire-roasted diced tomatillos and shipped to retailers in Oregon and Washington;
• A Marketside-brand (Walmart) Fiesta Salad from GHSE LLC, Green Cove Springs, Fla., for a total recall of 738 pounds of product containing a corn ingredient. The salad, recalled Oct. 17, was shipped to Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
• Almost 400 tons of ready-to-eat products with onions from Bakkavor Foods USA Inc., including Harris Teeter branded pizzas and breakfast burritos, and Trader Joe’s Carnitas, announced Oct. 21;SK Food Group, Groveport, Ohio/Reno, Nev., about 17,500 pounds of Jenny Craig brand chicken wraps with unspecified vegetables, recalled Oct. 19;About 210,000 pounds of pork products with unspecified vegetables from Buddy’s Kitchen Inc., Burnsville, Minn., shipped to “institutional locations: in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and New Jersey;
• Almost 300,000 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken and beef products containing “a vegetable ingredient,” by Envolve Foods, Carona, Calif., distributed to warehouses nationwide;
• Caito Foods LLC, Indianapolis, about 1,500 pounds of ready-to-eat salad and bowl products, including deLISH and Garden Highway brand salads with chicken with corn sent to retailers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Missouri; and
• About 1,245 tons of Go-Go Taquitas shipped to distributors nationwide from Ruiz Food Products Inc., Denison, Texas, with diced onions.
