Apio recalls Eat Smart salad products after positive listeria test

Guadalupe, Calif.-based Apio has recalled several Eat Smart salad products after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency informed the company that a random sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The sample came from a Sweet Kale salad that had a best-before date of Dec. 14.

As a precaution, Apio has recalled items produced on the same day and on the same line as the sample that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, according to a news release posted by the Food and Drug Administration.

“We’re conducting this voluntary recall as a precaution out of consideration for the wellbeing and safety of our customers and consumers, despite the fact that there have been no reported cases of illness,” Brian Zomorodi, vice president of quality and food safety, said in the release. “We continue to be committed to serving consumers with the very best quality product and service.”

The product was shipped to retailers and distributors in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington. In Canada, the product was shipped to customers in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
