The Food and Drug Administration is extending the deadline for comments on the agency’s New Era of Smarter Food Safety campaign.

The 15-day extension moves the deadline from Nov. 20 to Dec. 5, according to an FDA news release. The comment period opened Oct. 21, and the extension was to accommodate requests for more time.

Comments can be submitted on the Federal Register site, and the docket number is FDA-2019-N-4187, according to the release.

As of the end of Nov. 18, 28 comments had been logged on the Federal Register site.

The FDA will take the submitted comments, along with comments made during an Oct. 21 meeting/webcast, into consideration for what it calls the Blueprint for a New Era of Smarter Food Safety.

“We intend for the blueprint to outline how this new approach will address public health challenges, including being able to trace sources of contaminated foods and using new predictive analytics tools like artificial intelligence to assess risks and prioritize the agency’s work and resources,” according to the FDA release.

The goal is to create a more digital, traceable and safer system for food safety, according to the FDA.

The agency has a New Era of Smarter Food Safety page on its website for more information.
