A six-week online workshop on cleaning and sanitizing relating to the produce safety rule will be offered from Jan. 26 to March 2.

Jennifer McEntire, vice president of food safety for the United Fresh Produce Association, said the workshop was developed out the FDA’s observations during its produce safety inspections.

McEntire said the FDA thinks growers could use more education and clarity on cleaning and sanitation issues.

The workshop is offered jointly by the Food and Drug Administration, the National Farmers Union, Produce Marketing Association, the United Fresh Produce Association, Oregon State University and the Western Regional Center to Enhance Food Safety, according to the event website.

Registration is available online.

The workshop is on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. PST, beginning Jan. 26.
According to organizers, the workshop is intended for farm personnel with cleaning and sanitizing responsibilities involved in growing, harvesting, holding or packing covered produce.

Participation in the pilot is free for those in the qualifying target audience committing to attend all six sessions and to provide comprehensive and constructive course feedback.
