US Foods launches sustainable foods line
Foodservice distributor US Foods Inc. has introduced a line of sustainable food products.
Rosemont, Ill.-based US Foods' Serve Good line features 21 items that have been responsibly sourced or contribute to waste reduction, according to a news release.
One of the items, Cross Valley Farms' Chopped Broccoli Leaves, were chosen because they are grown with less water than other plants and yield 2,640
more pounds per acre than other products.
The Serve Good line also includes protein, bread, egg, oil, condiment, paper and other products.
"The demand for sustainable options when dining out continues to grow," Stacie Sopinka, US Foods' vice president of product development and innovation, said in the release. "In fact, nearly 70% of diners say they would have a better impression of a restaurant that offered sustainable foods. With the high-quality, on-trend and sustainable items in Serve Good, we can help our customers deliver what their diners want and stay competitive in this changing marketplace."
Nearly 40% of the U.S. food supply is wasted annually, and about $218 billion a year is spent growing, processing, transporting and disposing of food that is never eaten, according to data cited by US Foods.
