Fallbrook, Calif.-based Del Rey Avocado recently completed a major overhaul of the company’s Fallbrook packinghouse facility.

The construction was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but was completed in February of this year, according to a news release.

The upgrades include a streamlined receiving process and modern sorting, sizing and safety technology, as well as an ergonomic packout line, according to the release.

“Efficiencies were an important consideration for us in making this investment, but even more important was creating an environment our people could enjoy and thrive in,” Jessica Hunter, CEO, said in the release. “Our families have always been committed to providing the best possible tools and technologies, so our employees feel safe and productive.”

The firm, founded in 1969, has experienced an increased volume of imported product over the last several years, in addition to continued growth in California acreage, much of which is organic, the release said. The facility will help serve the company’s expanded volume.

The company’s ability to handle the larger volume of fruit in Fallbrook was critically important, the release said. The firm’s Vista facility, which came online over three years ago, is nearing capacity.

The Vista facility is equipped with the latest avocado packing equipment and is also outfitted with an impressive solar panel system that produces nearly 80% of the company’s electricity needs, according to the release.

“We are proud of the investments we and our fathers before us made in sustainable energy,“ Patrick Lucy, president, said in the release. “It is part of our commitment to being outstanding stewards of God-given resources and setting new standards for our industry that are aligned with consumer expectations, as well as meeting the goals of our retail partners.”
