Wal-Mart testing delivery ‘straight into your fridge’

Wal-Mart is looking to take home delivery to the next level, with service “straight into your fridge,” according to a news release.

The retailer is piloting a program in which a customer with a home security system can order groceries, receive a notification when a delivery driver has arrived at his or her home, and then watch on his or her phone as the driver enters the home using a one-time code, takes the groceries to the kitchen and puts them away in the refrigerator.

Wal-Mart is testing this concept with a small group of August Home customers in Silicon Valley.

“What might seem novel today could be the standard tomorrow,” Sloan Eddleston, vice president of e-commerce strategy and business operations for Wal-Mart, said in the release. “This may not be for everyone — and certainly not right away — but we want to offer customers the opportunity to participate in tests today and help us shape what commerce will look like in the future.”

Eventually, drivers might be able to drop off products in other locations within a home as well, he suggested.

“We want to do more in the future by delivering groceries and other orders in whatever location works best for our customers — inside the house for some and in the fridge/freezer in the garage for others,” Eddleston said in the release. “The possibilities are endless, and we look forward to exploring how we can further serve our customers’ needs.”
