Over a two-year period, sales of organic avocados have tracked fairly steady—representing 5% of total avocado sales and about 2% of total organic produce sales in both 2017 and again in 2019, based on IRI data.

Age clearly affects organic avocado purchases, which grossed more than $116 million in sales in 2019.

As was the case last year, the likelihood of a periodic organic avocado purchase increased as age decreased, with more than half of the youngest shoppers saying they bought organic avocados at least some of the time. In fact, those age 18-29 were among the most likely overall to buy organic avocados—whether exclusively or periodically.

Families with children living at home were more likely to always select organic avocados, at 13%, than those without kids, at 8%—and the likelihood for an organic purchase was skewed toward those with two kids or fewer.

Shoppers earning $50,000-$100,000 annually were the most likely consumers to say they selected organic avocados at least some of the time, when reviewing income levels. This same group was the most likely to always buy organic avocados last year, according to Organic Fresh Trends 2020.
