L&M organic production quadruples in Florida

L&M Cos. has four times the amount of organic produce planted in Florida this season.

The company’s farms are growing organic bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and and butternut and spaghetti squash in Branford, and broccoli, green and red cabbage and kale in Palatka, where harvest has already begun. Red and golden beets will also be harvested in Palatka, according to a news release.

“We have made great progress on our organic program and are as proud of our attention to detail and exceptional quality on organics as we are on our conventional products,” Adam Lytch, operations manager for L&M Farms, said in a news release.

Greg Cardamone, general manager of vegetables, said demand for organics continues to grow.

“With the recent truck shortage our customers have found it valuable to be able to load their organic and conventional items together — without giving up the valuable shelf life that cross-dock programs often bring,” he said in the release.

The company also has new purple organic packaging for organic products, including broccoli and cauliflower bags and tags, butt tags for organic cabbage, 3-pound mesh bags for sweet potatoes and hard squash labels, according to the new release.
