New packaging offered by Long Wind Farm
Cardboard clamshells are new for tomato grower Long Wind Farm, East Thetford, Vt.
Dave Chapman, co-director of the Real Organic Project and co-owner of Long Wind Farm, said the Real Organic Project label is growing. The appeal is to offer eaters a label that represents the original practices and values of organic agriculture, Chapman said.
Retail merchandising of organic produce seems to get the best results with a separate section, Chapman said.
“The biggest thing a retailer can do is to create a locally grown section,” Chapman said. “That usually greatly increases sales.”
U.S. organic demand could grow even more with greater government support, he said.
“Organic is growing faster in the EU due to real government support of the sector,” he said.
“If Certified Organic could regain the trust of its base, it could grow to the levels achieved in Denmark.”
