The organic version of this spiky vegetable found favor in households with children, according to Organic Fresh Trends 2020, as half of artichoke buyers with children at home said that they selected organic artichokes at least some of the time. Only 22% of those without kids said the same. Shoppers in the Midwest were more likely to buy organic artichokes than those in other regions.
When it came to periodic organic artichoke purchases, consumers age 50 and older were less than half as likely to buy organic artichokes periodically than younger shoppers (and data shows a similar trend with organic-exclusive purchases).
Shoppers earning more than $100,000 annually were less likely to always buy organic artichokes than those in the highest income bracket.
Even though the average retail price per pound of organic artichokes fell 43 cents from 2017 to 2018, the vegetable saw increases in year-to-year sales both in volume and in dollars, according to data from IRI/FreshLook Marketing.
Marketers moved more than 150,000 pounds more organic artichokes in 2018, and organic artichokes as a percentage of total artichoke sales increased from 2.7% in 2017 to 3.2% the following year.
