Starr Ranch Growers, Wenatchee, Wash., has new sustainable packaging for organic apples.

The company is starting a trial with a carton for organic fujis, with plans to extend the packaging for all organic apples, according to a news release.

The corrugated packaging replaces plastic clamshells. The initial package is an 8-count in a pulp tray (net weight 4 pounds), with nine in a master carton, according to Dan Davis, director of business development at Starr Ranch Growers.

They replace 5.5-pound plastic clamshells of varying counts, Davis said.

The new box design maximizes product visibility while protecting the fruit, according to the release.

“Corrugated cardboard boxes are easy to recycle, and the boxes can be folded and stored for later use,” Krista Beckstead, marketing and brand specialist, said in the release. “We want to provide the best quality product in a sustainable manner. This package is a good solution for the supply chain.”
