A web seminar on fleet management and transportation technology is available on demand.

The event, broadcast Nov. 5 and sponsored by The Packer and Cal/Amp, is available for viewing online.

The seminar, “Fleet Management and Transportation Technology: Data-Driven Operational Effectiveness and Visibility,” features:

  • Stewart Lapage, director of transportation for The Oppenheimer Group, (moderator);
  • Bill Westerman, vice president of product management for Cal/Amp;
  • Malika Ahuja, principal product manager for iOn Suite Cal/Amp;
  • Marcel Van Dijk, cargo marketing manager for the Port of Los Angeles; and
  • Brian Edwards, national transportation manager at UNFI Produce.

Especially with COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need for real-time visibility into their fleet as well as a place where customers, shippers, carriers and managing managers can access that data, Ahuja said.

“Having a system like we can provide, with all the relevant information about a transport vehicle in one location, so that people can get real-time information, (data) that affects the value chain, (is valuable),” Westerman said.

Examples of the data include real-time vehicle location, maintenance information, driver performance, truck and trailer capacity and loading dock locations, he said.

Edwards said that technology that allows better measurement of transportation efficiency will help produce companies maximize driver retention and drive productivity, which will be transformative.

Van Dijk said the Port of Los Angeles and other ports have put in place COVID-19 cleaning precautions, which take extra time. That adds to the challenges of moving intermodal cargo.

“You have the shipping lines, the terminals — and then the rail and trucking don’t always communicate with each other,” he said. “I think technology is a solution; we have to be more efficient.”
