Dennis Payne — Director of merchandising produce and floral, The Fresh Market

Dennis Payne is a “quiet strength in the produce industry. He is an innovator and a master of finding unique and new produce varieties to offer The Fresh Market customer,” say people who have had the pleasure of working with Payne. He has also been described as “the anchor” of The Fresh Market produce division and a program planner who tells the grower’s story as well as the grower tells it.

What does success in the produce departments of The Fresh Market look like to you?

The true success of The Fresh Market’s produce department lies in the remarkable impact our dedicated team members have on ensuring the freshest, highest-quality produce reaches our guests. Our aim is for every visitor to engage all their senses when they step into our produce section. Visually, we focus on creating artful displays that showcase the rich and vibrant colors of our extensive selection. We take pride in offering a wide array of seasonal, local and organic options, all presented in a clean and inviting environment.

The scent within our department is something we carefully cultivate. Imagine the aroma of fresh-squeezed oranges being juiced, mingling with the sweet scent of strawberries, the fragrance of tree-ripened peaches and the earthy notes of ripe heirloom tomatoes.

When it comes to touch, we ensure that all our produce feels as good as it looks. Firm, smooth and resilient — that’s how we describe our offerings. For our guests, the gentle squeeze of leaf lettuce and the crisp crack when selecting certain vegetables are signals of the freshness they can trust.

Finally, taste is the pinnacle of our fresh produce experience. Our commitment is to provide an eating experience that doesn’t just satisfy but creates lasting memories for our customers.

What drew you to a career in produce retail, and what keeps you in the game?

Growing up in the vibrant environment of New Jersey, the hustle and energy of the produce industry has always been a part of me. I’m truly passionate about the dynamic nature of this field — from the daily challenges to the shifts in seasonal produce. What I value most are the relationships built over the years, with our dedicated team members and trusted suppliers, all working together to provide the finest seasonal produce to our guests. This commitment to quality and collaboration is what drives me to continue thriving in this industry.

Next on my list is to explore the ancient Chinese discipline of Tai Chi. This “meditation in motion” offers numerous health benefits. Not only does Tai Chi improve cardiovascular fitness and lower blood pressure, but it also helps with balance — crucial for those of us on our feet all day — and provides mental health benefits to support overall well-being.
