Donald Alford joins JMB to focus on asparagus, sweet corn

Asparagus and sweet corn company Jacobs, Malcolm & Burtt, San Ramon, Calif., has hired Donald Alford in sales.

Asparagus and sweet corn company Jacobs, Malcolm & Burtt, San Ramon, Calif., has hired Donald Alford in sales.

Alford brings 30 years of experience to the company. He started at Sandstone Marketing, which specializes in cantaloupe, honeydew and specialty melons. He went to ATB in Turlock and Brawley, Calif., and then Sahara Packing Co. Inc, Brawley, according to a news release.

For the past 16 years, Alford has been sales manager at Altar Produce, dealing mostly with asparagus, but also green onions and wet vegetables, according to the release.

“We are very excited to bring Donald aboard, and know that he will make an immediate impact on our day-to-day operations,” Craig Rolandelli, JMB president, said in the release. “Together with Chris Brazeel, our long-time salesman, Donald will give JMB the needed sales support and structure to enable us to move forward with our growth plans for both Mexican and California asparagus as well as our packaged sweet corn.”

JMB imports asparagus from Mexico year-round, according to the release, and California asparagus March through May. Packaged Sweet corn is also available year-round from California and Mexico, according to the release, with corn from Mexico shipping December-March and California corn April through November.
In asparagus,

JMB’s California growers have invested in more than 150 new acres of asparagus, and more than $1 million for automated packing equipment to reduce costs, according to the release. Overall, the company and its suppliers invested more than $4 million to improve packing facilities and food safety operations in California and Mexico, according to the release.
