As competition was fierce and all of the many nominees deserving of recognition, The Packer and Equitable Food Initiative were challenged to identify just five finalists in their inaugural Grow the Good Farmworker of the Year award program. Nominations were sought from July 2023 to March 1, 2024.

An extension of their People First initiative, the collaboration will name the Farmworker of the Year at The Packer’s West Coast Produce Expo in Palm Desert, Calif., June 1.

Here The Packer and EFI offer a profile of finalist Eduardo “Lalo” Avina of Gonzales, Calif.-based Misionero. The following is based on feedback from Misionero and Avina’s coworkers.

Avina has spent the past 26 years in agriculture and the last seven at Misionero.

Known for his positive attitude, which he brings to work daily, Avina lifts the spirits of those around him, say coworkers. He goes above and beyond to support his colleagues, readily offering assistance whenever needed and actively encouraging them to excel in their roles.

One of Avina’s standout qualities is his unwavering willingness to learn and adapt, says Misionero. He enthusiastically approaches new challenges, seizing opportunities to expand his skill set and deepen his understanding. His insightful input and constructive suggestions are pivotal in resolving issues and driving progress within the team.

Avina is regarded as a role model by many of his peers. His dedication, empathy and genuine concern for the success of others serve as an inspiration to those around him, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

“Teamwork” is a quality often associated with Avina and noted by his peers. Not only does Avina prioritize his own personal growth, but he also fosters a culture of learning and inquiry among his peers, says Misionero. He encourages open communication by welcoming questions and discussions and facilitating knowledge-sharing and collaboration within the team.

He is also known for mentoring and training his colleagues, “generously imparting his wealth of knowledge and expertise,” the company says. His commitment to supporting the growth and development of others underscores his dedication to collective success within the company.

Avina is also an EFI team member, and his impact reverberates throughout the organization and has advanced through various positions within the company. He is driven by a strong self-motivation, aspiring to further his career trajectory while contributing to the company’s success.

“He is always willing to help people and more,” said one coworker.

“He represents a worthy example to follow,” said another.

“He is a good coworker, responsible, and works with a very good work ethic,” said a colleague of Avina — a finalist in this year’s Grow the Good Farmworker of the Year award program.
