What is the single most urgent shift the produce industry must make today to ensure it remains sustainable and profitable in 2030 and beyond?

“We need to make sure we are getting our younger generation involved in the industry and educating the consumer on the verbiage that’s been around awhile but sometimes forgotten: ‘Food is medicine.’ With childhood obesity at all-time highs, we must make sure we are teaching healthy habits at a young age.”

Tony Mitchell is a produce industry executive with more than 30 years of experience.

Mitchell began his career in the retail sector before joining Caito Foods in 1992. Following Caito Foods’ acquisition in 2017, Mitchell transitioned to SpartanNash, where he served as vice president of produce and floral merchandising.

In 2019, he joined Vision Import Group LLC as vice president of sales and business development. In 2021, Mitchell joined Associated Wholesale Grocers as vice president of corporate produce and floral. In 2023, he joined FreshEdge and Indianapolis Fruit as chief revenue officer. He was promoted to president in 2025.

He now serves as executive vice president of strategic partnerships at FreshEdge.
