Michigan asparagus season has started, following a cool spring that gave growers some extra time to prepare fields.

April snows and lower temperatures did delay the crop, but the season is officially underway, according to the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board, DeWitt.

Late-season snows dropped six inches of snow on asparagus fields, according to the advisory board’s executive director, John Bakker.

“Grower shippers are on schedule to harvest and deliver similar volume to last season.” Bakker said in a news release. “We’re expecting to see peak volumes toward the end of the month, just in time for Memorial Day.”

Pricing and quality are also on par with last season, according to Bakker, who stressed the importance of supporting U.S.-grown asparagus when available.

The Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board’s promotions this season focus on health benefits and supporting domestic asparagus, according to the news release. The advisory board will be sending new content each day and hosting weekly giveaways, via social media.
