The California Table Grape Commission, Fresno, has funded another round of Innovation in Teaching grants.

The program, started in 1993, supports innovative teaching projects in the California table grape growing regions of the San Joaquin and Coachella valleys, according to a news release.

The 51 grants of up to $750 each are going to K-12 projects in this school year. Project areas include agriculture, math, science and technology.

“It is great to see so many exciting and innovative projects being implemented by teachers in the state’s table grape growing regions,” Kathleen Nave, president of the commission,” said in the release.

Projects in the program this year include:

  • Bakersfield fifth-graders will grow vegetables for smoothies and healthy dehydrated snacks;
  • Rosedale Union School District middle-school music club students will learn about drums and hand percussion;
  • Evergreen Elementary School students will build a garden to learn how food grows; and
  • Delano fourth- and fifth-grade students will use pedometers to learn about physical education, health and nutrition.
