The California sweet corn crop, grown in the Imperial Valley, is ready for shipping.

Ryan Van Groningen, president of Van Groningen & Sons Inc., Manteca, Calif., said the wet winter in California has consumers there ready for grilling.

“There are a number of variables that affect California growing and consuming but a lot of it has to do with the weather,” Van Groningen said in a news release. “We had a very wet winter here in California, so right when the rain lets up, everyone is ready to spend some much needed time outside.”

The company anticipates a great sweet corn crop this year, according to the release, including white, bi-color and yellow varieties.

Unlike last year, when growers in California struggled with oversupply and lower demand, Van Groningen said this year is primed for a strong start with promotable volumes as the season starts in mid-April.
