Fresh Trends data shows potatoes are the most popular vegetable

Potatoes ranked only behind bananas among fresh produce items most frequently purchased, according to The Packer’s 2022 Fresh Trends survey.

Potatoes ranked only behind bananas among fresh produce items most frequently purchased, according to The Packer’s 2022 Fresh Trends survey.

In the survey, 62% of consumers said they purchased fresh potatoes in the past year, trailing only the 63% who indicated they purchased bananas.

By demographic, 2022 Fresh Trends data shows potatoes have consistent appeal across income levels. Survey results showed that women purchase potatoes more than men, and that shoppers with no kids are more likely to purchases fresh potatoes compared to consumers with kids.

By region, consumers in the South are the strongest consumers of fresh potatoes, according to 2022 Fresh Trends. By age, 2022 Fresh Trends results show that older consumers purchase fresh potatoes substantially more often than younger shoppers. By ethnicity, consumers who identify themselves as white are the most frequent purchasers of fresh potatoes, compared with other ethnic groups.

For income levels, Fresh Trends data indicates fresh potato consumption for:

  • 62% of those earning under $25K per year;
  • 60% of those earning from $25K to $50K;
  • 65% of those earning from $50K to $100K; and
  • 60% of those earning more than $100K.

By gender, Fresh Trends survey results show that 66% of women purchased fresh potatoes in the past year, compared with 56% of men.
By number of kids, Fresh Trends indicated fresh potato consumption for:

  • No kids: 53%;
  • 1 dependent child: 55%;
  • 2 dependent children: 50%;
  • 3 dependent children; 58%; and
  • No kids: 68%.

By region, Fresh Trends indicated fresh potato consumption for:

  • West: 60%;
  • Midwest: 58%;
  • South: 67%; and
  • Northeast: 67%.

By age, Fresh Trends indicated fresh potato consumption for:

  • 18 to 29: 36%;
  • 30 to 39: 48%;
  • 40 to 49: 67%;
  • 50 to 59: 68%; and
  • Over 60: 81%.

By ethnicity, Fresh Trends indicated fresh potato consumption for:

  • White: 66%;
  • Black/African American: 49;
  • Hispanic: 51%;
  • Asian: 57%; and
  • All other: 66%.
