Signaling that approval is on the horizon, the USDA says it has developed a pest-risk analysis for imports of hass avocados from Guatemala.

Giving interested parties until May 28 for comment, the agency outlined phytosanitary measures will allow the imports of hass avocados from Guatemala to the U.S. Supporting documents and any comments the USDA receives on the notice may be viewed at regulations.gov.

“After reviewing any comments we receive, we will announce our decision regarding the import status of fresh hass avocado (Persea americana var. hass) from Guatemala in a subsequent notice,” the USDA said in the Federal Register notice. “If the overall conclusions of our analysis and the administrator’s determination of risk remain unchanged following our consideration of the comments, then we will authorize the importation of fresh hass avocado (Persea americana var. hass) from Guatemala into the United States subject to the requirements specified.”
