Organics Unlimited touts organic, Fair Trade banana labels

(Organics Unlimited )

Organics Unlimited is touting its care of the environment, social responsibility commitments and total focus on organic bananas through its marketing efforts, said Mayra Velazquez de León, president and CEO of the San Diego-based company.

Velazquez de León said that having a low carbon footprint is vital to being socially responsible.

“Our harvest-to-order process means that you are getting the freshest organic bananas available,” she said. “Workers aren’t being exposed to harmful chemicals and neither are the growing communities that surround our farms.”

She said the company offers fair trade bananas with the GROW label, which started in 2005 as a way to support under-served banana growing communities in Mexico and Ecuador.

Through retailer and distributor support, GROW label banana purchases have provided more than $2.7 million in aid for youth educational programs, health clinics, dental and vision care in Mexico; clean water and early childhood education programs in Ecuador; disaster relief and environmental initiatives, including those that promote sustainability, she said.
