Potatoes enjoy a big footprint at retail
Ranking second only to tomatoes among vegetables in retail sales, U.S. retail potato sales topped $3.78 billion in 2022, up 15.3% compared with 2021.
Scan data from Circana reveals that retail potato sales in 2022 accounted for 5% of all produce sales and 10.2% of fresh vegetable sales.
The volume of all potatoes sold at retail topped 4.04 billion pounds in 2022, down 1.2% from 2021.
Fresh potato volume accounted for 21% of total fresh vegetable volume and 9.8% of total produce volume in 2022, according to Circana.
The average price for all retail potato sales (conventional and organic combined) was 94 cents per pound in 2022, up 16.6% from 2021.
Organic potato sales grew at better than a double-digit pace in 2022.
Organic potatoes accounted for $187.1 million in retail sales in 2022, up 12.6% from 2021, according to Circana. As a percentage of total retail potato retail sales, organic potatoes accounted for about 5%, according to Circana numbers.
The volume of organic potatoes moved at retail topped 117 million pounds, up 4.2% from 2021, according to Circana numbers.
The average price for organic potatoes in 2022 was $1.60 per pound, up 8% from 2021, according to Circana numbers.
