Seed breeder develops new arugula varieties in time for spring

Santa Maria, Calif.-based vegetable seed breeder Tozer is developing new and improved seed varieties following market trends.

Anoriginator of wild arugula seeds, Tozer’s has 20 years of arugula seed breeding experience, with many of varieties of the spicy mixed green recognized for their high quality, flavor and vigor, according to a news release. The company says its innovative breeding program has resulted in a wide range of highly sought-after varieties, such as various wild and salad arugula types, available for the upcoming spring season plantings.

"We are proud to offer several varieties of arugula seed to fulfill the growing market demand,” Anthony Stevenson, area sales representative for Tozer, said in a news release. "Our innovative varieties are developed through conventional breeding methods and are well-suited for both the fresh market and processing.”

Tozer’s state-of-the-art breeding program uses advanced technologies such as gene editing and molecular markers to create more productive varieties that are suited to various climate conditions, according to the release.

The company’s springtime arugula varieties are ideal for growers looking for increased yield, higher vigor and slower-bolting plants, according to the release. Tozer says its varieties of arugula, including Aphrodite and Eros, are wild types with intermediate resistance to mildew, guaranteeing a consistent and high-quality product.
