Nyssa, Ore.-based Snake River Produce is gearing up for another Northwest onion season, with plans to offer yellow, red, white and sweet onions from mid-August to early April.

“We may start a little later than normal this season to give the crop every opportunity to add size and volume,” said Tiffany Cruickshank, assistant general manager.

She said Snake River Produce is committed to educating the consumer about how the onion crop is grown and cared for, packaged and sold.

“Additionally, through our social media platforms, we hope to engage with end consumers and encourage increased onion consumption,” Cruickshank said.

Retailers can maximize sales, she said, by staging displays with attractive signage, maintaining freshness in displays, and using color with contrasting rows of red, yellow and white onions.

“Additionally, pairing or cross-promoting onions with other items such as potatoes, carrots, garlic, squash and proteins can be extremely beneficial to boosting retail sales,” she said.
