With another edition of Fast Facts: The Cast video series from Wenatchee, Wash.-based Stemilt Growers provides insights on selling apples in the summer and best promotion bets for the fall.

“It’s encouraging to see apple dollars up 3% and volume up 4.3% year-over-year during the past three months,” Brianna Shales, senior marketing manager, said in a news release. “The summer months are generally a slower time for apple promotions, but good availability and quality, larger pack size and consumer interest in apples has helped this category stay strong throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The video looks at Nielsen retail scan data for the past 12 weeks ending Aug. 22, according to the release. The top five apples by volume during the 12-week period, according to the release, were gala, Honeycrisp, fuji, granny smith and red delicious. Honeycrisp made up 27% of the apple category dollars during the period.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a bigger role for packaged apples, according to the release, with packaged apple accounting for 34% of the category dollars and 42% of cateogory volume in the 12-week period, according to the release. Compared with the same period last year, bags contributed 3% more dollars and 5% more volume to the apple category.
