The Hass Avocado Board is educating consumers on the health benefits of avocado consumption during November, National Diabetes Awareness Month.
The board cites recent research it funded showing that overweight/obese adults who ate an avocado at breakfast reported suppressed hunger. Because being overweight increases the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, the Hass Avocado Board is highlighting healthy recipes and has released a downloadable wallet card with nutrition tips.
“Everyday resources like recipes and handy tip sheets can be very empowering in the fight against diabetes,” Sylvia Meléndez-Klinger, registered dietitian and Saborea Uno Hoy (Love One Today) paid spokesperson, said in a release from the board. “Avocados already resonate with traditional tastes. Tools like these provide daily inspiration to minimize risk factors for diabetes with natural goodness.”
The downloadable wallet cards are available in Spanish and English.
According to the release, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicts that half of U.S. Hispanics will develop type 2 diabetes. The board surveyed Hispanic millennials and found that 87% would prefer changes in diet to prevent or manage type 2 diabetes without medication.
Researchers also have found improved insulin and glucose levels in individuals who ate an avocado at breakfast compared to a control group, according to the release.
