Avocado sales for fourth-quarter 2019 holidays saw some gains, according to the Hass Avocado Board, which tracks sales and volumes for holidays and events throughout the year.
The quarterly holiday report is part of a collection of retail sales report, data and consumer research from the board to help retailers manage the avocado category. Reports are availble on the board’s website, hassavocadoboard.com.
The fourth quarter holidays tracked by the HAB are Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.
Halloween: Sales reached $43 million, which is a 30% hike in dollars from 2016 numbers; pieces of fruit sold by retailers rose 91% since 2016, according to the HAB. On average, retailers across the country sold 420 pieces of fruit in the week of Halloween, with the West, California, and South Central regions exceeding the national average, accordign to a HAB news release.
Thanksgiving: Sales for Thanksgiving in 2019 hit a four-year high, with 37.4 million pieces of fruit sold for $40.5 million — a 55% increase in volumne and 33% increase in dollar sales over 2018. “It’s important to note that the 2018 Thanksgiving holiday may have had limited supply in the marketplace,” according to the release. All regions saw double-digit increases in both dollar sales and volumes.
Christmas: Sales were nearly $40 million, with 37 million avocados sold. Retalers sold an average of 388 avocados per store.
New Year’s: Retailers sold 42 million units, valued at $40 million, according to the report. That was an average of 441 pieces of fruit at each store.
