The Michigan Apple Committee, Lansing, is touting the state’s apples as a way to celebrate American Heart Month, which is February.

The committee works with Shari Steinbach, a former retail dietitian for Meijer and Spartan stores, to communicate health benefits of apple consumption, according to a news release.

“Apples are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber, which blocks cholesterol absorption in the gut and encourages the body to use, rather than store this waxy substance,” Steinbach said in a news release from the committee. “In addition, apple peels are packed with polyphenols. These antioxidants can prevent cellular damage from harmful molecules called free radicals.”

Steinbach and the Michigan Apple Committee developed a kit to help retail dietitians communicate the benefits of apple consumption. It includes recipes, meal plans and scripts for media outreach for the dietitians, according to the release. For electronic or hard copies, e-mail staff@MichiganApples.com.
