Nuro driverless vehicle hits the road for Fry’s grocery deliveries

An unmanned vehicle is now delivering groceries from Fry’s Food Stores in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Deliveries via autonomous Prius — with a vehicle operator — have been going on since August, but Kroger and Nuro announced Dec. 18 that the self-driving R1 has joined the fleet.

“Kroger customers are looking for new, convenient ways to feed their families and purchase the products they need quickly through services like pickup and delivery,” Yael Cosset, chief digital officer for Kroger, said in a news release. “Our autonomous delivery pilot with Nuro over the past few months continues to prove the benefit of the flexible and reliable technology. Through this exciting and innovative partnership, we are delivering a great customer experience and advancing Kroger’s commitment to redefine the grocery experience by creating an ecosystem that offers our customers anything, any time and anywhere.”

The inclusion of the R1 in the fleet for Fry’s Food Stores in Scottsdale marks the first unmanned delivery service available to the general public, according to the release.
