Prevention Magazine features Cosmic Crisp

The new Cosmic Crisp apple, which is finishing its first commercial season, is featured on the March cover of Prevention Magazine.

The magazine gave the apple the top slot in its 2020 Healthy Food Awards, for produce, according to a news release from Proprietary Variety Management which is commercializing the apple.

“We all know how important it is to make healthy choices about our foods, and apples are an ideal daily addition to a balanced diet,” Kathryn Grandy, director of marketing for Proprietary Variety Management, said in the release.

The apple also sponsored the 2020 Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards, honoring women’s efforts in fighting heart disease and creating awareness for the disease, which the American Heart Association calls the leading killer of women. Cosmic Crisp were distributed to attendees of the Red Dress Awards.

Cosmic Crisps have been in development at Washington State University’s Tree Fruit Breeding Program for 20 years, but growers have a plan for rapid growth in volume. Growers plan to produce nearly two million boxes this year, about four times the 2019 crop. The apples are available in December.

“Cosmic Crisp offers the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness, so it really satisfies as a snack,” Grandy said in the release. “Its firm texture is perfect for using in meals and pairing with protein. It bakes really well too.”
