Harvest for this year’s crop of Sunions, marketed as the tearless sweet onions, is over, and the onions are undergoing a curing process.
The onions, grown by Peri & Sons Farms and Onions 52, are in their fourth season of commercial availability.
“It took over three decades of development, careful farming and hard work to grow this game-changing onion, and we do not take that for granted,” Jeff Boettge, Sunions project manager, said in a news release. “We take pride in the uniqueness of our onions and take several steps to ensure they deliver the Sunions brand promise.”
The onions become sweeter the longer they are in storage, unlike other onions. Before shipping the onions undergo a triple-test process to make sure they meet specifications.
Sunions will be available in select retailers in late fall, according to the release.
