The Hass Avocado Board recently released the findings of a survey of shopper preferences and behaviors related to bagged avocados.

Survey respondents said they perceive bagged avocados to be underripe compared to bulk avocados, HAB said in a news release; for immediate needs, consumers will choose bulk avocados. Consumers also said they would prefer bagged avocados with fruit at various stages of ripeness.

HAB said the results show an opportunity for retailers to help shoppers understand ripening techniques.

The survey also noted avocado shoppers’ fruit size preference varies depending on its use. Shoppers will choose larger avocados when preparing guacamole or recipes that need a significant quantity, and they will select smaller avocados for snacking and everyday eating, according to the release.

HAB said retailers can take advantage of this by promoting bags with larger avocados during peak holidays and events.

The survey found that shoppers see bagged avocados as a better value and convenience. Many respondents noted that grocery stores prominently display bulk avocados, but often place bagged avocados in the middle of the produce department, HAB said, adding that retailers could relocate bagged avocados to increase grab-and-go sales.
