D’Arrigo Bros. of California, the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California Foundation and its Ag Against Hunger campaign, are teaming up to fight food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

John D’Arrigo, the president and chairman of D’Arrigo Bros. of California, Salinas, kicked off the Ag Challenge initiative to support the Food Bank for Monterey County and Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley, according to a news release.

D’Arrigo decided to donate $10,000 to each organization after seeing local media coverage on the charities’ needs during the crisis.

“How can I help these two organizations continue to fulfill their mission of providing fresh fruit and vegetables to individuals in need?” he said in the release. “So, I thought of the Ag Challenge.”

Salinas is under a shelter-in-place order by Monterey County officials.

“With the shelter-in-place mandate, it is our goal to support food service agencies that provide and deliver fresh fruit and vegetables to boost the immune systems of children, families and elderly as we combat this dreadful virus,” Claudia Pizarro-Villalobos, director of marketing and culinary for D’Arrigo of California, said in the release.

To donate to the Food Bank for Monterey County or to Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley through the Ag Challenge, contact Chris Valadez, president of the Grower-Shipper Association, at chris@growershipper.com or Abby Taylor-Silva, vice president of policy and communications for the association, at abby@growershipper.com.
