Here are retailers’ comments from the survey, identified by the individual’s role in the supply chain. To the question: “What role should buyers play in determining what social responsibility programs a supplier might choose?

Buyers’ role is to make sure produce is always available when it is needed. As a secondary objective, they can consider socially responsible programs as a bonus to working with a supplier, but bottom line is they need reliable supplies. If such programs are being considered, they should be aligned with what the company markets; if there are fair trade banners hanging in the store, then partnering with a fair trade supplier is best. If renewable energy use is marketed by a company, then a supplier that practices that is best.
